Spano Joins Lawsuit Against Democrats Unconstitutional Proxy Voting

Press Release

Date: May 27, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Ross Spano (R-FL), joined a lawsuit, led by Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), against Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats over the constitutionality of proxy voting in the House of Representatives.

"Asking the American people to safely return to work, while some Members of Congress stay home is not only hypocritical but also goes against over 200 years of precedent," said Rep. Spano. "My constituents have entrusted me to represent them in Washington, and I take this honor and duty very seriously. The Democrats are using a crisis to undermine the basis of democracy and Americans deserve better."

Voting by proxy, or allowing a representative to designate other representatives (Up to 10 votes, per every 1 Member) to vote on their behalf was authorized under H.Res. 965 on May 15th, 2020. The measure was passed in the Democrat control House with a vote of 217-189, with no GOP representative supporting it.
